For those of you who don’t know me, my daughter, day or night, rain or shine, rarely leaves the house without her sunglasses. For this reason, we are, what seems to be, always on the lookout her favorite accessory.

While walking the ENK Spring/Summer 2012 trade show in NYC, I was immediately drawn to Canadian-born , Sons + Daughters Eyewear™. This trendy collection inspired by pop culture icons, presents children’s sunglasses so stylish that us parents will be wishing they came in larger sizes.

I am very excited to have spoken with Calvin Yu, Creative Director/Co-Founder of SONS + DAUGHTERS Eyewear and to share this brand with you.

What is the story behind Sons + Daughters? My partner, Shiva is a fashion stylist and I am a creative director. We both have been into eyewear for a long time and many of our fashionable peers had started to have kids in the last while and we constantly heard they could not find high quality and stylish sunglasses for their kids. That’s when we came up with SONS + DAUGHTERS.

What does this brand stand for?  SONS + DAUGHTERS stands for STYLE and SAFETY. We produce great looking eyewear in the highest quality standards to make sure that your child’s eyes are covered properly.
Who is the Sons + Daughters customer (who are you designing for?)  The SONS + DAUGHTERS customer is the parent that is fashion forward but also conscious of buying quality, well designed product. They want the best for their kids and appreciate detail.

Can you briefly discuss the importance of children wearing proper sunglasses?  With lower quality eyewear you run the risk of issues with safety standards. Also, the frames, hinges and lenses of cheap children’s sunglasses often are not as durable as the components of quality sunglasses for children. Parents all know to apply sunscreen to the skin but for some reason there is a lack of emphasis on the eyes.

What drew you to starting the line?  We feel that kids deserve to look great and should have high quality especially for their eyes! We just didn’t see anything out there that provided both.

Where do you get your design inspiration?  We get our inspiration from culture whether it be music, art, film or fashion. Inspiration can happen anywhere and your imagination knows no limits.

What is your favorite accessories trend for Spring/Summer 2012?  We generally don’t specify on trends as we feel that classic and timeless are the best qualities.

What other children’s brands in the marketplace do you admire and why?  We think 2 independent brands that are amazing are A for Apple and Baby Lady. We love the fact they aren’t big fashion houses and have a great attitude.

Babesta is one of my favorite neighborhood boutiques and that is why i am so excited to have been able to interview founder and owner, Jennifer Cattaui.   For years, Jennifer has been introducing parents to trendy children’s wears that conjure up a bit of funky urban culture, connecting downtown New York style with independent artists and designers. Babesta gives style-savvy parents an alternative to the typical designs of baby and toddler clothing and accessories. Please tell us a bit about yourself:  Formally a tax attorney, this has been an atypical career trajectory. After graduating law school, I worked as a consultant at Ernst & Young in NY. I moved to Paris for some years, and then came back and got into magazines. I worked at several magazines, and eventually started Babesta. Now I run Babesta (with the help of an amazing team), but also work as the Editor-in-Chief of Earnshaw’s magazine, a 94-year-old children’s apparel business magazine. I have two beautiful girls – Amina (7) and Camille (5) and a wonderful husband (11 years married, who acts as our accountant on the side). It’s all a family affair.

What inspired you to open Babesta?  It’s a familiar story – I was pregnant with my first daughter in 2004, and was working for a fashion magazine. I was looking everywhere for cool clothes that reflected me and my tastes. I found a couple small run tops and outfits at local stores in my neighborhood, designed by a neighborhood artist. I started collecting cool things I’d find wherever I went. Eventually I put them together in a lookbook online, which turned into an e-commerce site. We’ve grown organically ever since.

Where did the name Babesta come from?  I wanted something that would connote cool city baby meets pop culture. Babesta is pronounced “babe stah” ( like rapsta, gangsta) not “bah beh sta” (which sounds like a luxe Italian boutique)… Here’s our pronunciation video.

What do you look for in clothing/accessories companies when buying for the boutique?  I look for goods that are unique, fun, high quality and nod to pop culture. I look for small labels, new labels, with amazing creative designers behind them. Everything is hand-picked from designers all over the world. Everything also has to be low maintenance – no special washing instructions or dry cleaning. Who has time for anything else.

What advice would you give to parents shopping for their children?  Do you find that most parents take the same stylistic approach with dressing their children as they do with themselves?  Keep it fun. There are so many amazing brands out there – support these great artists and designers that put so much work, time and love into every design. I find that parents do extrapolate their own stylistic sensibility to their children’s wardrobe. I sure do!

Any future plans for Babesta?  Further building out our online site to make everything rock even more. We’re always trying to spread the word and introduce new parents and kids to these awesome brands and fun styles. We’re also always coming up with new “xtreme playdates” – a series we have in the store – where we offer fun activities for children (in the past we’ve done superhero cape making, large-scale photography projects, and creativity classes with pop artists like JK-5 and Heidi Kenney). Maybe another storefront in the near future as well. Location TBD
